FAQs About Dental Crowns, Teeth Cleaning, and Other Family Dentistry Services

  • What services are typically included in family dentistry?

Family dentistry can include preventive, restorative, and other dental services designed to address oral health needs at different stages of life. At Dental Associates of Wethersfield, we provide services ranging from routine dental exams and teeth cleanings to restorative and cosmetic treatments. Having these services available through one dental practice can make it more convenient for families to manage their ongoing dental care.

  • Can my entire family visit the same dental office?

Yes. We provide family dentistry for patients of all ages, from infants and young children to adults and seniors. This allows parents, children, and other family members to establish ongoing relationships with the same dental practice while receiving care suited to their individual needs.

  • When should I schedule my child's first dental appointment?

A child’s first dental visit is generally recommended when their first tooth appears or by their first birthday, whichever comes first. Starting dental visits at an early age allows the dentist to monitor the development of the teeth and gums, identify potential concerns, and provide parents with guidance about brushing, oral hygiene, and other aspects of caring for their child’s developing smile.

  • Why should families schedule regular dental appointments even when no one has tooth pain?

Dental visits are not limited to treating toothaches or other noticeable problems. Routine exams and preventive services allow our team to monitor your family's oral health and identify potential concerns that may not be causing symptoms yet. Staying consistent with preventive care can also help reduce the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental problems.

  • How often should I schedule a professional teeth cleaning?

We typically recommend exams and teeth cleanings every six months, but the appropriate schedule can depend on your oral health and individual needs. Our dental team can recommend a cleaning schedule based on the condition of your teeth and gums.

  • Why do I need professional teeth cleaning if I brush and floss at home?

Daily brushing and flossing are important parts of maintaining your oral health, but professional teeth cleaning provides additional preventive care. Regular cleanings allow dental professionals to remove buildup and evaluate your teeth and gums for signs of problems such as tooth decay and gum disease.

  • What is the difference between a routine teeth cleaning and a deep cleaning?

A routine teeth cleaning is preventive care intended to help maintain healthy teeth and gums. A deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing, may be recommended when gum disease is present. During scaling and root planing, plaque and bacteria are removed from below the gumline, and the tooth roots are smoothed to support the healing of the gums.

  • Can regular teeth cleanings help prevent gum disease?

Routine teeth cleanings are an important part of reducing the risk of gum disease. Removing plaque and other buildup helps keep the areas around the teeth and gums cleaner, while regular dental exams give our team an opportunity to look for signs such as bleeding, swelling, recession, or other changes in the gums.

  • Why might I need a dental crown?

A dental crown may be used when a tooth needs additional protection or restoration because of damage, decay, wear, or other concerns. The crown covers the affected tooth to restore its shape and function while helping protect the remaining tooth structure. Our dentists can examine your tooth to determine whether a crown or another restorative treatment is appropriate.

  • Can a dental crown be used for a cracked or damaged tooth?

Depending on the extent and location of the damage, a dental crown may be an option for restoring a cracked, weakened, or otherwise damaged tooth. Because every situation is different, the tooth first needs to be evaluated to determine whether it can be restored and which treatment would be suitable.

  • What should I do if my dental crown becomes loose or comes off?

Contact our office if a dental crown becomes loose, damaged, or comes off completely. Avoid attempting to permanently reattach the crown yourself. Our team can evaluate the crown and the underlying tooth to determine whether the existing restoration can be addressed or another treatment is necessary.

  • How can I take care of my teeth after receiving a dental crown?

Good oral hygiene remains important after a crown is placed. Continue brushing and flossing regularly, paying attention to the area where the crown meets the natural tooth. Routine dental exams and teeth cleanings also allow our team to monitor your crown along with the health of the surrounding teeth and gums.

  • What types of dental problems may require an emergency dentist?

Severe tooth pain, dental injuries, broken or damaged teeth, lost restorations, swelling, and other sudden oral health problems may require prompt dental attention. If you are unsure whether your situation is a dental emergency, contact us so we can discuss your symptoms and help determine the appropriate next step.

  • Can I contact Dental Associates of Wethersfield for a dental emergency after normal office hours?

Yes. At Dental Associates of Wethersfield, we always have a doctor on call 24/7. If you experience a dental emergency after normal business hours, you can call our office and be directed to the personal phone of the doctor who is on call.

  • Should I go to an emergency dentist or the hospital for a dental problem?

Many urgent problems involving the teeth and gums can be evaluated by an emergency dentist, but a serious medical emergency requires appropriate emergency medical attention. If you believe you are experiencing a true medical emergency, call 911.

  • Where is Dental Associates of Wethersfield located?

Our dental office is located at 20-30 Beaver Road #102, Wethersfield, CT 06109. We welcome patients from Wethersfield as well as Hartford, Glastonbury, Newington, Rocky Hill, and other surrounding communities.

Patient forms are available online for added convenience.
