A root canal is needed when decay extends into the inner pulp of a tooth, where the nerve is located, causing infection. During the procedure, the infected tissue is removed, the inside of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned, and the canal is sealed to help prevent future problems. Most patients report minimal discomfort during treatment. Afterward, the tooth is restored with a filling or crown, allowing it to function much like a natural tooth for years to come.
